Qian Xuesen

钱学森

1911–2009

BrahminKshatriya Engineer

Qian Xuesen was a leading Chinese scientist in applied mechanics, aerodynamics, and engineering cybernetics. He studied in the United States under Theodore von Kármán and worked on jet propulsion; after returning in the 1950s he helped found China’s missile, rocket, and space programs and is widely regarded as one of their principal architects.

Beyond technical work, Qian promoted systems engineering and a modern science-and-technology framework for organizing large projects and complex problems. His career bridged theory, engineering practice, and scientific organization, and holds a major place in twentieth-century Chinese history of science and technology.
