W. Edwards Deming was an American statistician and quality-management expert. Trained in engineering and mathematical physics, he applied statistical methods to industry and government surveys. After World War II he taught statistical quality control and management ideas in Japan, helping shape manufacturing quality systems there.
Deming stressed understanding process variation, continual improvement, and systems management, and is widely known for his Fourteen Points. His work linked statistics to organizational practice and became a major source of modern total quality management and continual-improvement movements.
